FIRE

In the Origin of the Fire we meet perhaps the most universal myth of all.

That is the The Dive for Earth. In this ancient myth there is always two players: a god and his assistant or opponent.

The assistant may be a bird (Northern myths), a turtle (India), an otter (North American Natives), a beatle (South East Asia), other god (Finnish) and the opponent the Devil himself (Northern).

The theme is always the same: the god tells the assistant to dive to the bottom of the primordial sea and fetch some soil.

This is scattered around by the god to form the land. However the assistant/opponent hides some of the soil in his mouth but is compelled to spit it out and this forms the mountains.

With the soil that is fetched from the bottom there is also the Flint, often blue in color. The god hits then fire creating angels and simultaneously the devil hits also fire creating his imps.

From these flying sparks originates also all the fire on the earth.

So the Origin of the Fire is closely connected to the creation of good and evil.

In some versions of the myth the creation of the earth and fire takes place in the heaven and the fire is stroke with three feathers of an eagle.

In the Finnish myths the fire strikers and so the creators of good and evil (in this case in the form of snakes) are Ilmarinen, the Ruler of the Sky and Väinämöinen who according to the myth floated in the primaeval sea. So also here is repeated the theme of a god and a diver.
